"Life and Times of a Pandemic Musician"

If you're wondering why you haven't seen any recent pictures of my new rescue cat, Zoe, it's because she won't come out from under my bed until after I've gone to sleep at night. I know she eats because I see her empty food bowls in the morning. And I can tell she explores and plays by the scattered toys on the living room floor and her paw prints all over the kitchen counter and cabinets. It's been 10 days now and I'm beginning to wonder when this 4-year-old's going to warm up to me... But for now, let's finish the story of my first vacation with someone who truly did love me at Montauk, LI. Welcome to another excerpt from my memoirs, "Life and Times of a Pandemic Musician."

After the fourth night of our vacation, Nina and I again faced the stress of finding a room to stay in for the next two nights. We took a chance and stopped by the Memory Motel and lo and behold, someone had just cancelled. They could book us for one night. Excellent! After a great breakfast, we spent another gorgeous day on the beach -- she sunning herself while reading her New Age philosophy books, occasionally getting her feet wet and me Boogie Boarding the thrilling but vicious waves. In between we'd go up near the dunes and play fierce frisbee.

We found the local movie theater that evening and after enjoying a relaxing picnic dinner, took in Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder." Afterwards, we walked along the ocean campfires, stopping to talk to some people we had met at the beach, and then retired back to our room to renew our intimacy.

The next morning, we checked out, took a ride out to the Montauk Lighthouse and walked around the grounds where Nina used to spend summers with her uncle, the Montauk Chief of Police. On the way back into town, we stopped at a local supermarket to pick up some beach food. Unfortunately, on the way out of the parking lot, we made an illegal turn and got pulled over by the police. Nina started looking real nervous until I said in front of the officer, "didn't you used to spend summers with your uncle, the Montauk Chief of Police at his house up at the lighthouse?" We got off with a warning. Sweet!

But we still needed to find a place to stay for our last night. On the way to and from the Lobster Roll restaurant during the week, we noticed a bunch of large hotels off the highway, directly on the Atlantic Ocean. We stopped at a few but all had the "No Vacancy" sign lit. Fortunately, we found one that didn't! Very expensive, the hotel looked gorgeous and came with a large indoor pool, outdoor tennis courts, and best of all, a near deserted ocean beach.

So we made the reservation, stowed our bags, and headed to the surf. Absolutely fantastic! While throwing the frisbee around, I talked to Nina about an ancient Chinese book I had studied on my own while in High School called "The Art of Love." It teaches that men should never climax while engaging in sex. Essential to preserve the Chi. It details the many advantages including a long, healthy life and the ability to give a woman hours of multiple orgasms. Surprisingly, she didn't like the idea and remained unimpressed until I demonstrated the technique later that night, LOL!

So after some tennis in the late afternoon when it cooled down a little, we checked into our room, showered, and drove down the street for final, romantic dinner at the Lobster Roll. Afterwards, we took a final walk through the main strip in town and then retired back to the room for my little "Art of Love" demonstration...

We got up early next morning for an invigorating game of tennis, checked out, and spent our final day enjoying the private beach. Mid afternoon we headed to the indoor pool to change back into driving clothes for the trip home. As you can guess, knowing me, I got completely lost and pretty much freaked out. Kudos for Nina for tolerating one of my major flaws...

After a stroll through the park and now nearly halfway through the Covid-19 Summer of 2020, I return to the apartment, sweat and re-learn the bass lines to the first CSN record while getting all misty-eyed dreaming of my "Lady of the Island." One <3
