"Life and Times of a Pandemic Musician"

Misha 7 6/26/20

Time to pull back the covers a little further on the Misha saga before we put this love story to bed. A turbulent romance for sure - but after all, it involves me, LOL! I think Bonnie Raitt sums it up best in her ballad, "I Can't Make You Love Me." Welcome to another excerpt from my memoirs, "Life and Times of a Pandemic Musician."

"Cause I can't make you love me if you don't. You can't make your heart feel something it won't. Here in the dark, in these final hours, I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power. But you won't, no you won't 'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't."

After about a year of dating, Misha's lease ran out on her house in Norwalk and she decided to move to Darien and rent her ex-husbands beach house. After a monumental, drawn-out packing job, the momentus day finally arrived for Misha, her two daughters, and myself. We began loading up all the vehicles. Except for some reason, her youngest daughter, who wouldn't lift a finger!

I kept my mouth shut for as long as I could, but finally said something to Misha. She replied, "Just let it go." Of course that did not sit well with me. So I politely asked Ellen myself to give me a hand with some of the boxes. She glared at me with huge teenage attitude, humphed, and walked away. Another red flag. I just let it go.

But I dug the new digs on a private street directly on the Long Island Sound! We could pop on our bathing suits, cross the road, climb up the rocks, and dive in for a glorious swim. Oh my, my! Things always went well with the older daughter, and even appeared to move forward in a positive direction with the younger one. Until one fateful night when Misha invited me and my two kids over for dinner with Ellen...

Misha cooked up a sumptuous spread, a veritable feast. But I got a little nervous watching Ellen's teenage angst. She looked glum and did nothing to reach out to my children and make them feel welcome. When Ellen finished and left the table, my young, elementary school kids asked me, "Dad, what's up with her? Why doesn't she like us?" Just then, Misha came over to invite us all to stay the night for a slumber party!

"Misha, did you ask Ellen about this?" "No, it won't be a problem." "Please ask her before I get the kids settled in." She put up a little fuss but then went and did it. Ellen exploded! She did not want us staying there overnight. I couldn't believe it! I pulled Misha to the side and said, "Really?" Misha tried to work it out, but Ellen put her foot down. When I told my kids that Ellen didn't want us to stay, they got really upset, started crying and hugging me. So we left. Another huge red flag!

So on another extremely humid, sultry, Covid-19 day on which I had to take myself to a doctor's appointment at a very scary WestMed, I try to sweat these bad memories out of my system, digging deep, isolating them, and exorcising them once and for all. No better way of doing that then by learning the bass lines to Bonnie Raitt's best-selling album, "Luck of the Draw." One <3
